World Oceans Day 2023
As we mark World Oceans Day today, it is important for us as engineers to reflect on our role in protecting and preserving our marine ecosystems
The oceans, which cover over 70% of our planet, provide us with invaluable resources, including food, energy, and transportation routes. However, they are facing unprecedented challenges, and it is high time we take the lead in addressing one of the most pressing issues: the alarming increase in atmospheric CO2 levels and its detrimental impact on ocean health
Our oceans have long been the unsung heroes in mitigating climate change by absorbing vast amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. They have acted as a natural sink, buffering the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. But sadly, we have reached a critical turning point. Recent scientific studies have shown that the oceans can no longer absorb any more CO2, and that we must find other ways to absorb the excess emissions.
